MU’AWWIDHATAYN

Surah Al-Falaq (113) and Surah An-Naas (114) are collectively known as Mu’awwidhatayn, meaning “the two Surahs in which refuge with Allah is sought.”

Imam Baihaqi (in Dala’il an-Nubuwwat) has stated that these two Surahs were revealed together, which is why they are commonly referred to by this combined name.

Although they are written separately in the Mushaf, their subject matter and purpose are deeply connected.

HISTORICAL CONTEXT OF REVELATION

When the Holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ began openly preaching Islam in Makkah, opposition from the Quraysh intensified. After all attempts of compromise failed—and especially after Surah Al-Kafirun made the message clear—the hostility reached extreme levels.

Abu Jahl famously said:

“We and Bani Abd Manaf were rivals… Now they claim a Prophet inspired from heaven. How can we compete with them? By God, we will never acknowledge him.”

It was under these severe conditions that Allah revealed Surah Al-Falaq and Surah An-Naas, commanding the Prophet ﷺ to seek refuge in Allah from all visible and hidden evils.
